Eevee Shines in the Pokémon TCG. We take a look back at some of Eevee’s most memorable (and adorable) cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. As anticipation continues to grow over the upcoming release of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! for Nintendo Switch, fans are getting more excited about the lovable Eevee’s co-starring role in the latest Pokémon adventure. We’re devoting the month of September to the little Evolution Pokémon!
It should come as no surprise that Eevee has been an important part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game since the game’s inception. Although Eevee’s cards aren’t necessarily powerhouses on their own, any player that hopes to play one of Eevee’s evolved forms would need a few of the Basic Pokémon in their deck. And there’s no denying that Eevee makes your deck way cuter! Whether you’re a hard-core player or an avid collector, you’re bound to enjoy this look at some of Eevee’s most memorable Pokémon TCG appearances.
This is where it all began. Although Eevee was not included in the initial Pokémon TCG Base Set, it was featured in the game’s first expansion, Jungle. Eevee’s original card, which features the Evolution Pokémon pouncing merrily through a field of flowers, does a great job of establishing its carefree character. This Eevee may look slightly different than the Pokémon we’re used to today—its proportions are a little different, and it’s missing the distinctive white marking on the end of its tail—but this happy little Pokémon is undeniably Eevee.

How do you make something that is outrageously charming even more so? Why, have it give the camera a wink, of course! Eevee certainly knows this trick, as evidenced by the multiple cards that feature it batting its eyes at the viewer. It may be out at the market, curled up in someone’s lap, or splashing around with some of its fellow Eevee, but this photogenic Pokémon always knows how to play to the crowd. Let’s just hope nobody teaches Eevee how to flash the peace sign at the camera along with the wink. We probably wouldn’t survive that cuteness overload.

Many Eevee cards feature the Pokémon exploring grassy fields and wooded areas, which feels like the right environment for it. But Eevee does occasionally take a trip into more urban areas. In an early card from the Aquapolis expansion, Eevee is running toward the city, excited to see what adventures await. Eevee also isn’t afraid to explore a city at night. The gentle glow of the street lamps looks especially warm reflecting off Eevee’s fur. It’s not all fun and games in the city, though. When it encounters large, icy barriers in the streets, Eevee looks ready to battle!

With its welcoming eyes and perpetual smile, Eevee is obviously a very social Pokémon. We have evidence of this in a few cards that feature Eevee hanging out with some of its Pokémon friends. Judging by its delighted expression, Eevee seems thrilled to be meeting up with Carnivine (and check out that trademark wink)! This scene of Eevee and Pikachu frolicking in a flowery field might suggest the pair’s co-starring turn in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, though the card was released several years earlier. Although Eevee is alone in its appearance in the Skyridge expansion, it is looking longingly at primitive cave paintings of Doduo and Tauros. Poor little Eevee wishes it could be playing with those Pokémon right now!

We recently featured a Creator Profile on the creators of Pikachu. One of those creators was Atsuko Nishida, a character designer for the Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green video games. In addition to designing Pokémon for the video games, Ms. Nishida has also illustrated hundreds of cards for the Pokémon TCG. Not surprisingly, she’s given us her interpretation of Eevee on a few different occasions. Her first Eevee card was featured many years ago in the Team Rocketexpansion. This version of Eevee looks super cute as the camera is positioned above it, allowing the viewer to look down on its diminutive frame. The delicate line work and soft colors on this Eevee make it look very sweet and gentle. It’s not too hard to imagine a porcelain statue in this pose. We’re once again looking down on Eevee in this recent card from the Sun & Moon—Ultra Prism expansion. And yes, that particular angle continues to make Eevee look endlessly huggable.
Of course, these are just a few of Eevee’s many appearances in the Pokémon TCG. This month would be the perfect time to sort through your collection and gather up your favorite Eevee cards. Which ones are your favorites?
