FanArt Friday: The Sweetness Of Pokémon

For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is deeply honored to feature the art of the phenomenal Chilean artist Aome.chan. This talented and resilient artist was also a part of the wonderful project of Ilustradoras Unidas titled Pokedex Ilustrada.

Our featured artist described art as something she has always felt as an extension of herself: “I’ve drawn since I have memory. And it has helped me through many happy and sad moments.”

She said that people usually think she’s always happy because she’s always drawing cute, pink, or any kind of adorable stuff, but that’s far from the truth.

“Honestly, I just like to convey joy, no matter how sad and depressed I am.”

Back in her student days and because of the schools she was in, our featured artist felt very criticized.

“It was frowned upon for a girl to draw, especially in the anime style. It was usually something more reserved for men. I remember going to manga workshops and being the only woman there. But I never gave up, even in my worst moments. Many people have tried to mess with me and even harassed me by spreading lies about me, but I never let that stop me from enjoying the things I love,” she explained. “I do the thing that hurts the most, and that’s persisting. And I think that’s what everyone in my situation would like to do. So, I keep going on and don’t give up on the things I love. I do my job with a smile on my face. Drawing has helped me make money now, and it makes me happy that what I do is beautiful and that people like it. I want one day for my son to look at me and say that he is proud of his illustrator mother and that her drawings helped him to live happily.”

“Many aspects of my life were affected by sexism, including my relationship with Pokémon. I have loved Pokémon since the moment I first laid eyes on it when I was 5 or 6 years old. The unfortunate thing is that it was considered something for boys and not for girls. As a result, I yearned for the things my brother had. I remember that my parents didn’t want to get me the Pokémon Album and instead got me the Barbie Album,” Aome shared.

Our featured artist also recalled that she learned the Pokémon “from the encyclopedia, collected the Pogs and figurines, and even ate the Pokémon paste.”

“I had a chubby Pikachu toy,” she added. “I was a big Pokémon fan, and I freaked out when I got an emulator to play the Pokémon games.”

“Nowadays, I draw Pokémon, but I wanted to mix it up with another part of me, such as baking. I’ve been baking for a long time, and I’ve always liked to cook. So, I make drawings of Pokémon related to candies and desserts. Candies make people happy because of their taste and cheerful concept, and I wanted to capture that with this combination.”

#Eevolutions 🧁

Combining her passions is a special thing for Aome.chan.

“As an artist who has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), I have very fixed and long-term tastes, like my liking for drawing and video games (even if I couldn’t play them a lot until I got an emulator). I still keep drawing and loving the same things I liked as a child, but I also feel that our tastes evolve, especially when we fulfill the dreams that we once had. I always wanted to do this, drawing and selling my stuff, and seeing people enjoying them. It’s also great to see years passing by, and Pokémon is still attracting new generations. It’s great to see parents and children sharing their love for it.

Choosing a favorite Pokémon is a difficult task for Aome.chan.

“I have a soft spot for Chansey because someone once told me that I’m like her, since I love the color pink, tend to help others a lot, and know how to defend myself. Although, I think I would be more like a Blissey. But back to Chansey, I truly enjoyed and cried a lot while watching the episode of the Pokémon Anime where Jessie from Team Rocket wanted to be a Pokémon Nurse and went to a school of Chanseys. I also love butterfly-like Pokémon, rabbit-shaped Pokémon, and Corsola because they are so cute or pink,” she concluded.
