Pokemon GO has been out for about three weeks now, providing fans with another interactive way to catch ’em all. Since its debut on July 6, it has garnered the attention of millions of people around the world, regardless of whether they are familiar with the Pokemon franchise or simply know it by name. So far, players have been thoroughly enjoying everything it has to offer but could do without the server issues. To see what several critics had to say about Pokemon GO, check out the review excerpts below:
Digitally Downloaded – 5/5
“Never has a game managed to get people to flock over to specific areas of town like birds to seed. People point to it being too simple as a game, but really the game bit is barely relevant.”
Pocket Gamer – 9/10
“Despite its problems, Pokémon GO is an immensely enjoyable experience. The very personal nature of catching Pokémon in your own neighbourhood – something I’ve wanted to do since my first steps in Pallet Town all those years ago – made me smile more than any game has for years. It’s the Pokémon game I always wanted.”
Polygon – 7.5/10
“Right now Pokémon Go is in a fascinating position, a cultural artifact whose power and pervasiveness is impossible to ignore, even if you’re not playing it. Is it good? That’s a complicated question that’s going to change depending on how much you value a game’s mechanical depth versus the unique social experience it provides.”
Hardcore Gamer – 3.5/10
“It’s exciting to think of what Pokémon GO could become and if you haven’t downloaded it already, do it. It’s free, there are no ads and even people who don’t know what Pokémon are have been having a good time with it.”
GameSpot – 7/10
“When it works, Pokemon Go feels like a natural evolution for the series, very much a product of the times without making the mainline series obsolete. Its bugs and high battery consumption do not outweigh the old-but-new thrill of capturing Pikachu at a local park or vanquishing a Snorlax while conquering a gym.”
IGN – 7/10
“What Pokemon Go needs is more features to support that real-world interaction. Things like Pokemon trading and leaderboards, which developer Niantic says are incoming, could keep that momentum up. Even if it will be short-lived, though, there’s no doubt it’s exciting to be a part of while it lasts.”
The Guardian – 2/5
“It’s not just another mobile game and it’s not another Pokémon game – it’s an entirely separate beast on the cusp of something vast; a glimpse into the future of widely accessible augmented reality.”
