Why Pokemon was omitted from the Rio 2016 Olympics closing ceremony

If you watched the closing ceremony for the Rio 2016 Olympics, you may have wondered why Pokemon wasn’t a part of it. Super Mario, Hello Kitty, Pac-Man and even Doraemon made an appearance, but Pokemon did not due to it not having as much “international recognition” as the aforementioned brands. In addition, ceremony preparations were made before the the popularity of Pokemon GO, according to Buzzfeed Japan (via Anime News Network).
