The Pokémon anime’s first Japanese theme song returns in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

When the original Pokémon TV anime debuted in Japan on September 8, 1998, the theme song was “Mezase Pokémon Masutaa” or “Aim to be a Pokémon Master.” It’s now 2017 and the classic theme is back! The current Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon began using the theme this week to mark the 20th anniversary of Pocket Monsters.

If you’ve never seen the old Japanese opening, have a look and a listen:

The show has been used for several Pokémon anime series, getting different versions over the years.

Rica Matsumoto, who voices Ash in the Japanese series, recorded the original version and is back for this 20th anniversary episode.
