The upcoming Pokémon anime series is simply called Pocket Monsters, a direct reference to when the anime first began back in 1997. The setting takes place in all Pokémon regions to date, including Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola and Unova. Ash and Pikachu are returning alongside a new trainer named Go and his partner Scorbunny. Go is described as a 10-year-old boy who’s aim is to catch the Mythical Pokémon Mew, which he remembers meeting when he was younger. He typically has a calm demeanor but also has a tendency to be hot-blooded.
The Pokémon Company has revealed a new building in the Kanto region called Sakuragi Laboratory, where Ash and Go will start their adventure. This location also serves as the hub for when they travel to different regions. Professor Sakuragi is the head of Sakuragi Laboratory, and he also happens to be a Pokémon researcher that provides support for Ash and Go on their adventures. Professor Sakuragi is voiced by Yūichi Nakamura, who longtime anime fans may remember as the voice of N.
Another new character named Koharu is Professor Sakuragi’s daughter and a childhood friend of Go. She loves her Pokémon, especially the Electric-type dog Yamper because it’s brimming with curiosity. Koharu is voiced by Kana Hanazawa, who previously played May in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire animated trailer that was made to promote the release of ORAS in 2014. Seiyu fans may recognize her as Red Blood Cell from Cells at Work!
The series will officially premiere on November 17, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. JST. Even more details will be revealed during the next episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon on October 13 in Japan.
