Covid-19 Event & Feature Updates

Last Updated: August 17, 2021

This article will be updated periodically with information related to the status of various in-game events and feature changes.

For a list of features that allow you to play Pokémon GO where you are, check out this site.

Changes to Items, Features, and Bonuses that are now part of standard gameplay

  • The number of Gifts you can carry in your inventory is increased to 20.
  • Open up to 30 Gifts per day, up from the previous 20.
  • Incense will last for 1 hour, rather than the previous 30 minute duration.
  • 3× Stardust and XP for your first Pokémon catch of the day.
  • No walking requirement for GO Battle League.
  • Challenge any Trainer to battle remotely with a QR Code.
  • Trainers can battle remotely with Good Friends (1 heart). Previously, this was only possible with Ultra Friends (3 hearts) and Best Friends (4 hearts).

Changes to Items, Features, and Bonuses (Effective Globally Unless Otherwise Specified)

PokéStops and Gyms
  • Trainers can now join Raids remotely with Remote Raid Passes. In the future, Trainers joining the Raid remotely will do less damage than Trainers joining in-person, but currently they do the same amount of damage. Also, there is normally a limit of 5 Trainers who can join a Raid remotely in a single lobby, but currently that has been bumped up to 10.
  • Increased distance from which you can interact with Gyms and PokéStops.

EX Raids
  • Trainers won’t receive invites to new EX Raids.

Field Research and Special Research

Gifts
  • PokéStops will drop Gifts more frequently, however they are not guaranteed from each individual spin.
  • Gifts will contain more PokéBalls than usual.
  • Your Buddy Pokémon will now bring you more Gifts each day, up to five Gifts at once and up to three times a day.
Incense
  • Incense effectiveness is increased, attracting Pokémon to you more often.

Increased Pokémon Encounters
  • Pokémon habitats will increase and more Pokémon will be appearing in the wild.

Region-Specific Changes to Items, Features, and Bonuses

The below updates are being applied on a rolling basis to individual regions in accordance with recommendations from global health organizations. Currently, these changes are in effect for:

  • New Zealand
  • The United States

PokéStops and Gyms
  • Gifts containing certain items that were previously brought to you by your Buddy Pokémon will be shifted to boosted supplies from spinning PokéStops and Gyms.
  • Previously, PokéStop and Gym interaction distances were increased, to enable people to engage from further away. After this change the distance will revert back to the standard distance, although this may be increased during future events and as part of certain features.

Incense
  • Previously, Incense effectiveness was universally boosted. After this change, Incense effectiveness is boosted only while moving; if you are stationary, Incense effectiveness is set at the standard level.

Gifts
  • Previously, your Buddy Pokémon brought you more Gifts each day, up to five gifts at once and up to three times a day. After the change, the frequency of these gifts from Buddy Pokémon will be reduced.

Seasonal Exploration Bonuses

Starting at the end of July, 2021, additional bonuses will be added on a rotating basis, changing with the beginning of each new Season within Pokémon GO. Some bonuses may roll over from Season-to-Season.

Please note that these bonuses are not global and will only apply to those regions in which outdoor exploration has been deemed safe by global health organizations.
