FanArt Friday

For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is ecstatic to feature the talented artist known as Dream Ball Art.

DBA revealed to Pokémon Blog that Art is a hobby for them, and they only picked up drawing Pokémon a few months ago (in fact, their first Instagram post was on April 1st) for something to do as a break from work.

“I just enjoy making this stuff. Art is a nice break from all the other activities I have to do,” They explained.

“I’ve always needed some creative outlet, so now I’m glad to be able to funnel a lot of that into this… before this, I would just be drawing and making things that no one would see.”

Pokémon has brought so much joy to our artist since their early childhood. They have countless memories with the Franchise since they collected cards, played the main games, and watched the original anime.

“My favorite Pokémon games have to be the Unova games and their sequels… Technically, my first game was Diamond, and X was the first game I properly played all the way through. But Unova will always be the most nostalgic for me. Also, Gen 5 was the gen that truly perfected the 2D Pokémon format,” They mentioned.

DBA shared that they haven’t watched the anime since the start of Gen 6, and this is why the departure of Ash and Pikachu from the anime didn’t bother them as much as it bothered other people. They also mentioned that they would like to see them back in future projects, but they aren’t desperate for it.

“Although (I haven’t watched the new episodes of the anime since the beginning of Gen 6), I have been working through watching it all from the start with my little sister in the last couple of years. We are just about to start Battle Frontier now. So, there’s a good hundred (Pokémon) episodes I need to go through.”

“These wings were made to fly”

“The main thing that keeps me interested in Pokémon these days is my younger sister being really into it. It feels great being able to share one of my favorite parts of my childhood with her…. I mostly enjoy it as a creative outlet or as an interest I share with my younger sister.”

Dreaming.

DBA doesn’t listen to music while drawing. They prefer to watch videos on Youtube when working on their artwork.

For our featured artist, their least favorite thing about being an artist is dealing with Instagram and its weird algorithms: “It’s exhausting not being able to post what you want and have it do well or not based on its own merits. My most viewed reel is a trending audio reel, and it had more than triple the views and likes of my most viewed reel not following a trend.”

Fidough, Bread and Instagram Trends.

“I feel like most average artists on the platform are using Instagram to share the art they would be creating anyway (which I love, I follow around 200 of them), but I feel like my goal is more to make stuff specifically for Instagram,” they mentioned.

“I’m far from the most talented or experienced artist on here (Instagram), but I’m doing my best to make my stuff entertaining. I’m having people vote on what I draw next, posting ‘Who’s that Pokémon?’ reels and such… I’ve got plenty more ideas for the future as well to post things on here that are probably a bit different from the average art account. I’m just trying to have fun with it and make something people can enjoy and even be involved in.”

“I got my 3D printer back in 2020 and gradually taught myself to use software like Blender and 3D Builder. Eventually, I started using Switch Toolbox and the model files from Sword and Shield to put the Pokémon models into Blender and started printing off figures to paint. The quality of the models had a pretty steep incline over time. They were about 4cm tall, poorly painted, with very rigid poses and a rough surface, but I started getting better. I’m pretty proud of the most recent ones I’ve made. I’ve only posted a handful on Instagram so far, but I have over 40 hand-painted Pokémon figures I’ve made in the past three years. It’s a lengthy process. I’ve spent over 60 hours all in on one model before, and when working with 3D printers, even the slightest thing being not quite right can set you back countless hours, so I’ve not made many recently. But now that I’ve gotten my hands on some Scarlet and Violet model files, I’m hoping to get a few more made,” DBA shared.

Lapras and Nessa!🌊💙

Their favorite Pokémon are Krookodile, Gengar, and Goodra.

The favorite Pokémon of our featured artist

“I love drawing Goomy. I’m using it as the mascot for my account since I’m primarily drawing the smaller and cuter Pokémon at the moment, especially those from Gen 5. Many Unovan Pokémon are featured in my Pokédex Challenge, as I believe they suit my art style better.”
