After entertaining Pokémon fans for 26 years, Ash Ketchum retired from the anime. On December 16th, 2022 it was announced the next entry would be titled Horizons.
The new series has been running in Japan for the last eight months. On November 2, Pokémon announced the debut date for the English dub. It will arrive on Netflix next year on February 23.
The creation of the new series marks the end of an era for the Pokémon franchise. Ash Ketchum first debuted on television across the world in 1998. The young trainer has visited every Pokémon region and traveled with 18 different companions. He has starred in over 1,000 episodes and 23 movies during his career.
Pokémon Horizons has taken the show in a new direction. The series is helmed by two new protagonists named Liko and Roy (who are also ten years old). The anime has changed into a whodunit format in which Liko is the main character. She tries to solve the mystery of her grandmother’s pendant while keeping it safe from criminals (Explorers) trying to steal it.
Trainers in the non-Japanese-speaking world will have to be patient. The English version won’t debut on Netflix until February 23. There is one streaming service in the West, it is available on. The BBC has been airing episodes and posting them to its iBBC streaming service. Currently, iBBC can only be watched by viewers residing in the British Isles.
For many fans, it’s impossible to imagine a Pokémon anime episode or movie without Ash Ketchum. Only time will tell if Liko and Roy can fill the void that he left behind.
