For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is deeply honored to display the art of the phenomenal Paulina, also known by her pseudonym Saurenix. This talented crochet artist is from Chile and has collaborated on the incredible project of Ilustradoras Unidas titled Pokédex Ilustrada.
For Paulina, Art is the ability to express herself and let off her emotions without having to talk them out or explain them.
“I started crocheting because I had a lot of anguish at a certain point in my life,” she revealed. “When I started to learn how to knit, my brain entered a ‘state of peace.’ Crochet became my therapy and an artistic outlet that I could do persistently, unlike painting or drawing (since I was a perfectionist and unable to be constant with them).”
The Pokémon Anime marked the childhood of Paulina.
“I didn’t have the opportunity to play any of the Pokémon games until I was 14 or 15 years old. Pokémon Black and Pokémon White 2 were the first Pokémon games I ever played, and from that moment on, Pokémon became my favorite franchise of video games. I loved the Pokémon designs and the main story from Pokémon Black and Pokémo White onwards. The last Pokémon Game I played was Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield, and I didn’t like playing it on the Switch.”
“I also used to play Pokémon TCG, but now I only collect cards. I don’t care about playing Pokémon TCG anymore. (I remember) they didn’t use dice when I used to play it.”
Our featured artist is searching for the cards illustrated by Asato Ito because “they are amigurumis, and it would be cool to have all the cards with his illustrations.”
Combining crocheting and Pokémon is a very fulfilling experience for Paulina since she’s a fan of stuffed animals, and finding well-made Pokémon Plush Toys is complicated for her.
“They always make Plushies of the most popular Pokémon, and I don’t know any store in Chile with the models of all the 1000+ Pokémon that currently exist. So, when I learned to knit and entered the world of Amigurumis, I said to myself: ‘Now, I can make my own stuffed animals and the Pokémon I want.’ I started with Shuckle. I saw a pattern of him, and I wanted to make one for myself.”
“I haven’t had much time to make my own Pokémon Amigurumis, but I have had the opportunity to do commissions of several Pokémon, which has made me very happy. Especially if they resemble the original Pokémon since I’ve seen the original Tomy Plushies, and they don’t look like them or are ugly.”
When it’s time to ask her about her favorite Pokémon, there’s only one answer: MEWTWO.
“I found him cool in the first Pokémon movie, but I ended up falling in love with him when I watched the animated short of his birth,” she concluded.
