Collecting Max Particles and Dynamaxing Pokémon

Max Particles are mysterious energy particles that are concentrated at Power Spots. Trainers use Max Particles to join Max Battles and train a Pokémon’s Max Moves.

Collecting Max Particles

Trainers can collect Max Particles at Power Spots. To collect Max Particles:

  1. Locate a Power Spot on the Map and tap to enter.
  2. While viewing the Power Spot details, tap the Max Particle bubbles [icon] to collect them.

You can receive extra Max Particles when you’re interacting with a Power Spot for the first time. 

Max Particles can also be collected as you explore your local area, including with Adventure Sync. Keep in mind that you can only collect up to 800 MP a day. Additionally, your Item Bag can only carry 1000 Max Particles at a time.

The in-app shop and Pokémon GO Web Store also have Max Particles available for purchase.

Using Max Particles

Max Particles can be used to enter a Max Battle and train a specific Dynamax Pokémon’s Max Moves. 

Entering Max Battles

Each Trainer must use a certain amount of Max Particles to engage in battle. The specific amount of Max Particles required will vary depending on the power of the Max Battle boss. 

Max Particles are only spent upon the successful defeat of the Max Battle boss. Learn more about Max Battles here.

Training Max Moves

Dynamax Pokémon are able to use special, powerful Attacks called Max Moves. Max Moves can be used when battling other Dynamax Pokémon at Power Spots. There are three different types of Max Move:

  • Attack: An extra-powerful Charged Attack that will vary from Pokémon to Pokémon based on their individual Fast Attack. This can also be changed by using a Fast TM or Elite Fast TM to change the Pokémon’s Fast Attack.
  • Max Guard: Creates a barrier between the user and the Power Spot Boss, reducing damage taken. 
  • Max Spirit: Raises the spirits of the user and any allied Pokémon, recovering some HP.

Each of these Max Moves has a level associated with it. Use Max Particles and Candy to train the individual Max Moves, making them more effective when you go into battle against a Dynamax Pokémon. To Train Max Moves:

  1. Tap to open the main menu.
  2. Locate your Dynamax Pokémon in your Pokémon Storage.
  3. Scroll to Max Moves.
  4. Tap the Max Move you want to train and select to which level you want to improve it.
  5. Tap Train.
  6. Confirm you want to use the Candy and Max Particles by tapping Yes.
