FanArt Friday: Mimikyu And The Tale Of The Pokémon Who Only Wanted To Be Loved

For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is ecstatic to showcase the incredible art of the talented Bakustrider. Not only did they participate in the third, fourth, and fifth generations of Pokédex Ilustrada, but they are also the Pokémon expert for Ilustradoras Unidas.

They also were part of the project celebrating the “First Anniversary of FanArt Friday” titled “Pokémon Fan: Dibuja Tu Equipo Soñado.”

Defining what art means in their life is no easy task for Baku.

“Art came to me as it does to everyone in childhood, left me as it does to most children growing up, and then returned during my teenage years when I saw a girl drawing on the covers of her notebooks. I thought to myself, ‘Hey! I want to do that! I want to try that!'”

#FishingTime!🎣 Such a vibrant drawing for the third generation of Pokédex Ilustrada!✨

They are very open about seeing art as a form of liberation rather than communication, as they still struggle to express themselves.

“I do not seek to communicate with art; I strive to liberate the chaos that I control in my mind (I call it like that) in some kind of way,” they explained.

Pokémon has been a part of Baku’s life since childhood, but unlike art, it never left them.

Pokémon was always there—from when they were a 4- or 5-year-old watching the Pokémon anime on national TV, receiving their first (unofficial) Pikachu plushie (which they still don’t let anyone touch), and using emulators during the third generation to getting their first console and playing their very own video game, Pokémon X, without having to share it with their older siblings.

And now, their journey continues with Pokémon Violet.

“Pokémon is an important part of me,” they shared. “It shaped who I am as a person. Even my first drawings were always of Pikachu and Togepi.”

Will-O-Wisp!🔥 Baku had the privilege of illustrating the mysterious essence of the most popular Pokémon from Unova for the fifth generation of Pokédex Ilustrada!💜

For Baku, combining two things you love is not always easy, but it helps when they are connected.

For example, it’s easier to link art with a visually rich franchise like Pokémon.

Such a cool illustration!!!🦄

It’s a hard task for them to choose a favorite Pokémon because they have one for each type, generation, and region. They even have favorites among the Eeveelutions and pseudo-Legendaries.

“If I have to choose only one, I would pick Mimikyu because of his concept. He’s a Pokémon that ends up cursing or even eliminating anyone who sees him under his Pikachu costume, and he does it unintentionally. He only wants to be loved for who he is, even though he wears a Pikachu costume to appear less threatening. But he’s not Pikachu, and he never will be. He’s Mimikyu~dayo. I also appreciate his type combination—it was truly helpful during my first run in Pokémon Moon,” they concluded.
