For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is delighted to showcase the spectacular illustrations of a terrific and unique artist known as Kiel Nightmares. He has contributed to every generation of Pokédex Ilustrada, the marvelous project led by the dream team at Ilustradoras Unidas.
Although he hasn’t been very active lately, art remains a fundamental pillar in his life.
“I was a violinist in a youth orchestra, I studied literature in college, and I’m an amateur illustrator. All these disciplines are valuable for the main objective of my art: nightmares. I enjoy creating twisted monsters, writing sinister stories, and bringing intangible elements—only visible through nightmares—to life. I draw what I cannot touch, what I cannot see. I draw what terrifies me, so that I can live in peace,” Kiel shared with the Pokémon Blog Team.
Like many people born in the ‘90s, Pokémon was also a big part of his childhood.
“Personally, I’ve always liked creatures and collecting (I still do)—two elements that converge beautifully in this franchise. The creation of monsters and fantastic animals was enhanced thanks to Pokémon, which gave me structured patterns that helped me understand many things about the organization of ideas.”
Kiel considers art a vital element in human life.
“Through art, the mind sings and the heart rests. We are one of the few beings capable of producing art at the level humans do. I believe that without art—without my music, without my lyrics, or without my illustrations— there would be a part of me locked inside my body, begging to see the outside world. Art is freedom, and I believe that everyone should practice it, even if only a little, in order to truly understand themselves,” he stated.
Gengar is his favorite Pokémon, without a doubt.
“This Pokémon was my first introduction to the franchise, and I’ve always had one on my team in every game where it’s available. There are many reasons for this: it’s the first Pokémon to appear on-screen, the first Ghost-type, and the first to have a truly sinister appearance. Gengar embodies everything I’ve ever liked, from past to present, condensed into a single Pokémon,” he concluded.
