Golf Story Nintendo Switch Review | A Charming Golf RPG That Still Stands Out

Golf Story is a unique sports adventure that successfully blends golf mechanics, RPG-inspired progression and comedic storytelling into an experience unlike most games in the genre. After spending more than 13 hours with Golf Story on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 through backward compatibility, the game stands out as a charming and surprisingly deep golf RPG that remains enjoyable thanks to its fun atmosphere, memorable characters and creative approach to combining competitive golf with a quirky adventure world.

The biggest strength of Golf Story is how confidently it builds a believable world around golf. The game takes the sport seriously enough to deliver satisfying mechanics while still embracing silly situations, unusual characters and humorous scenarios that keep the adventure entertaining. Golf gameplay features a surprising amount of depth, with different tools, terminology and strategic elements that make each competition feel more engaging than a simple arcade golf experience. Competitive events are consistently fun, while side activities such as frisbee challenges add variety beyond traditional golf. The ability to hit golf balls almost anywhere, including at people who react to being hit, reinforces the playful design philosophy that makes the world feel interactive.

The writing and characters are another major highlight. Golf Story balances a silly sense of humor with a genuine appreciation for the sport, creating memorable moments through funny dialogue, entertaining rivals and unexpected situations throughout the adventure. Areas with unusual themes, including the spooky town featuring zombie encounters that require using golf shots to overcome obstacles, showcase the game’s willingness to embrace creativity without taking itself too seriously. The music complements the experience well, while the classic visual style remains effective years later by clearly presenting different environments and terrains despite not being the most technically advanced presentation. The pixel art direction gives the game a distinct identity that fits its lighthearted tone.

Golf Story also succeeds because of its amount of content. The adventure feels expansive, with plenty of activities, distractions and areas to explore, creating strong replay value for players who enjoy discovering everything the game offers. The RPG elements are relatively simple, focusing more on supporting the golf adventure rather than creating a traditional role-playing experience, but they still provide a sense of progression throughout the journey. The combination of exploration, competitions, character interactions and optional activities gives the game a strong sense of variety.

That said, several design choices limited my overall experience. The biggest challenge is repetition, as some gameplay structures begin to feel familiar over a longer play session. The retry system is also frustrating because failing a mission or challenge often requires going through dialogue again instead of providing an immediate restart option. Restarting certain challenges can also feel inefficient because players may need to continue through an attempt that is already clearly going poorly before trying again. These small quality-of-life decisions make some sections feel slower than they should.

Golf Story can also be difficult to approach for players without much knowledge of golf. While the game includes many golf concepts, terms and mechanics, I did not feel it provided enough explanation for newcomers. A glossary, beginner guide, training system or more detailed explanations could have made the experience more accessible for players who are learning the sport alongside the game. The world design occasionally feels disconnected rather than seamlessly connected, and character movement can feel somewhat clunky due to its classic-style controls. The limited movement options sometimes make exploration feel less fluid than modern adventure games. The RPG systems are also fairly basic, which may disappoint players expecting a deeper role-playing experience.

The game’s length and pacing are another area that depends on player preference. Golf Story offers a lot of content and replay value, but after reaching major milestones, the adventure can begin to feel more extended than expected. For players who enjoy long games filled with activities, this is a strength, but those looking for a more focused experience may find the pacing occasionally uneven.

Golf Story remains a memorable Nintendo Switch golf RPG because of its charm, humor, creative gameplay ideas and surprisingly detailed approach to the sport. While repetitive sections, limited RPG depth, inconsistent accessibility for golf newcomers and some frustrating quality-of-life choices prevent it from reaching a higher level, the game’s personality carries it through. For players looking for a unique blend of golf, adventure and comedy, Golf Story is still a worthwhile experience that showcases how creative a sports game can be.

Final Score: 7.5 out of 10

Golf Story is equipped with entertaining golf mechanics, memorable characters, funny writing, strong atmosphere, large amount of content and creative combination of sports and adventure gameplay. Its repetitive structure, limited RPG systems, lack of stronger golf tutorials, clunky movement and frustrating challenge retry design keep the experience from reaching a higher score, but the game’s charm and originality make it easy to recommend to players interested in a different kind of golf game.

Pokémon Lens

Golf Story connects to Pokémon through its emphasis on progression, discovery and building mastery over time. Like Pokémon, the game encourages players to improve through systems rather than simply following a linear challenge path, with new skills, knowledge and experience gradually changing how players approach competitions and obstacles. The combination of exploration, optional activities and character-driven progression mirrors Pokémon’s philosophy of rewarding curiosity, where understanding the systems and experimenting with different approaches becomes just as important as reaching the next major milestone.
