Welcome to Paldea, the new region introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet! There’s so much to see and do as you set out to explore this exciting open world. Which Pokémon will you choose? Who will you meet? What sort of exciting adventures will you have? It’s all up to you, so prepare for your journey with this handy guide.
Choosing Your Path
Even if you’re a longtime Pokémon fan, the new open-world design of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet brings a fresh feel to the classic series. With so much to do, you might feel like a Magikarp out of water at first, but this guide will help start you off on the right foot.
Your Paldean adventure begins when you enroll at a school in the city of Mesagoza. There, you’ll be tasked with completing an independent study project called the Treasure Hunt, during which students are encouraged to travel the world in search of a treasure to call their own.
Soon after enrolling, you’ll be presented with three different storylines, each of which branches off into its own series of adventures throughout the game. Completing major tasks in a given storyline opens up new paths, skills, and items that can help you progress through the others. You’re free to tackle these tasks in any order, but keep in mind that you might need to finish certain elements of one storyline before advancing further into another.
Which storyline will you pursue first: Victory Road, Path of Legends, or ★ Starfall Street ★?
Victory Road
Challenge Gym Leaders and Become a Pokémon Champion!
The story of Victory Road will be very familiar to Trainers who’ve played previous games in the Pokémon series. You’ll travel from town to town, battling Gym Leaders and earning Gym Badges with the goal of becoming Paldea’s newest Champion-ranked Trainer. Aside from the prestige of being counted among the region’s top Trainers, collecting these badges allows you to catch and command Pokémon of higher levels. So, if you want a powerful team—and trust us, you do—you’ll need to prove yourself in battle against Paldea’s best and brightest.
The path between Pokémon Gyms in the Paldea region is not as clearly defined as in previous games—that’s because the open world of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet allows you to complete each challenge in (nearly) any order you choose.
The eight Gym Leaders’ Pokémon all have set levels that don’t change relative to those of your team’s, which means you might find yourself outmatched the first time you challenge a Gym. Don’t be afraid to avoid a battle for which you aren’t prepared. You can always gather more Exp. Points, complete other tasks, and try again later. After all, training up your Pokémon to take on more advanced Trainers is a hallmark of the Pokémon series.
Path of Legends
Battle Titan Pokémon and Search for the Herba Mystica!
In the Path of Legends storyline, your classmate Arven will ask you to help him hunt down rare plants called Herba Mystica. Together, you’ll search high and low for these legendary herbs scattered throughout the region. But beware—they’re guarded by Pokémon of unusual size and strength known as Titans. And as you’ve probably already guessed, you’ll have to defeat the Titan Pokémon in battle to claim their condiments for yourself.
The Legendary Pokémon Koraidon (in Pokémon Scarlet) or Miraidon (in Pokémon Violet) will accompany you on your journey, acting as your primary mode of transportation. Defeating Titan Pokémon won’t just put you in Arven’s good graces—it’ll also provide Koraidon or Miraidon with valuable new skills. Once you drive a Titan away from its lair, you’ll enjoy a celebratory sandwich made from your hard-earned Herba Mystica. Share it with Koraidon or Miraidon to grant your Legendary Pokémon friend a new power such as dashing across fields, moving over water, or gliding through the sky.
With these new ways to get around, you’ll be able to move around the region more quickly and reach locations that were previously inaccessible. If you hit a roadblock on your travels, taking the time to track down a Titan Pokémon can make exploration that much easier!
★ Starfall Street ★
Face Off against the Troublemakers in Team Star!
Whether you love to hate ’em or hate to love ’em, the Pokémon series is full of villainous teams that delight in making your life difficult. Some of these baddies have world domination on the brain, while others are simply overenthusiastic fans of Pokémon battles. In the Paldea region, you’ll be opposed by Team Star, a group of rebellious students who have committed that most dreadful of offenses: cutting class! During the ★ Starfall Street ★ storyline, your mission—should you choose to accept it—is to teach these truants the downfalls of delinquency.
Unfortunately for you, Team Star’s various crews are surprisingly organized, and they’ve established well-fortified bases throughout the region. Even less fortunately, some of the crews have set up barricades that block off crucial paths, preventing you from proceeding to new areas until the troublemakers have learned their lesson.
To get past one of Team Star’s barriers—or simply to continue the storyline—you’ll have to raid their base and defeat a horde of opposing Pokémon within a set time limit. But instead of taking on grunts in traditional turn-based battles, you’ll select a trio of Pokémon to send out in Auto Battles against Team Star’s Pokémon, which are roaming freely inside the base. During Auto Battles, your Pokémon will attack without requiring your direct input, but you’ll still need to keep a close eye on your team and make sure no one gets too worn out to keep battling.
If you defeat enough of the grunts’ Pokémon before time runs out, their boss will confront you in a souped-up vehicle called a Starmobile. Defeat the boss in a turn-based Pokémon battle and the base will fall, opening up any barricades and netting you some useful items to boot.
The Journey Continues…
Even when you think you’ve completed Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, that hardly means your adventure is over. There’s always more to do in Paldea, such as completing the region’s Pokédex, searching for elusive Shiny Pokémon, and continuing to catch, hatch, and train Pokémon to form your ideal team. You might even be able to find new ways to enjoy Pokémon battles!
Catching Pokémon in Paldea
Naturally, you’ll want to assemble a team with a few powerful Pokémon (and then some!) to accompany you on your journey through the Paldea region. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to encounter and acquire Pokémon, so before long, you’ll have a trained-up squad that’s ready to battle!
Read on to learn about choosing your first partner Pokémon, catching wild Pokémon, Tera Raid Battles, and trading Pokémon. Also see this guide’s Finding Eggs section for the inside scoop on Pokémon Eggs!
Choosing Your First Partner Pokémon
Near the start of your adventure, you’ll have to make an important decision: Who will you choose as your first partner Pokémon? Will it be the Grass-type Sprigatito, the Fire-type Fuecoco, or the Water-type Quaxly? There’s no wrong answer, of course—whichever one you pick is sure to become a faithful friend. Just be sure to catch Pokémon of other types to build a well-rounded team capable of facing whatever challenges come your way.
Catching Wild Pokémon
The easiest way to add more Pokémon to your team is to catch wild Pokémon. As you travel through the region, you’ll see plenty of Pokémon roaming around the landscape. Unlike many previous Pokémon RPGs, there are no random Pokémon encounters in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. If you want to catch a wild Pokémon, you’ll have to approach it (or let it approach you!) to begin a battle. Keep an eye out for small groups of wild Pokémon that will occasionally form. Battling or catching the Pokémon in these groups is a great way to gather Pokémon materials—you’ll learn more about those in this guide’s How to Make TMs section—and train specific stats for your Pokémon. For example, here’s a tip that experienced Trainers should find useful: a group of six Bounsweet can yield six base points for your Pokémon’s HP!
In Paldea, you’ll be the one who hides in tall grass. You can gain an early advantage over a wild Pokémon by sneaking up behind it without being seen, then tossing the Poké Ball containing your party’s lead Pokémon. If the Poké Ball hits the wild Pokémon, a battle will begin! Attack the wild Pokémon to lower its HP. The closer it comes to being knocked out, the easier it will be to catch. Using moves that inflict status effects, such as paralysis or sleep, also increases your odds of success. Once you think you’ve weakened the wild Pokémon enough, throw a Poké Ball to try and catch it. If the Pokémon manages to break out of the Poké Ball—and some definitely will—you can keep trying until you succeed. Just make sure to carry lots of Poké Balls so you don’t run out!
Tera Raid Battles in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
Join forces with other Trainers to take on powerful Terastallized Pokémon in Tera Raid Battles. After forming a group with up to three other players, you’ll face off against a wild Tera Pokémon that you’ll have the opportunity to catch if you manage to defeat it within a time limit.
During a Tera Raid Battle, you’ll notice a yellow bar underneath the wild Tera Pokémon that slowly drains over time. Your goal is to defeat the Tera Pokémon before that meter is depleted. Note that Tera Raid Battles don’t use the standard turn-based format found in traditional Pokémon battles. Instead, you’ll select a move or a cheer, and once that action has been completed, you’ll be able to choose another. Meanwhile, your teammates and the wild Tera Pokémon will be seamlessly acting on their own—gone are the days of waiting for other Trainers to take their turn!
After three attacks, you’ll be able to Terastallize your own Pokémon, which can help turn the tables in a tough Tera Raid Battle. However, if your Pokémon is knocked out, its Terastallization will come undone and you’ll lose time on the meter. You’ll also be out of the battle for a little while before you’re able to send your Pokémon back into the fray. Success in Tera Raid Battles can come down to a matter of seconds, so be prepared for a challenge and make every moment count!
Trading Pokémon
Not only is it fun to trade Pokémon with other Trainers, it’s also a great way to obtain some of the Paldea region’s more elusive Pokémon. After all, certain Pokémon can only be encountered in either Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, so trading with friends is a great way to make progress in your Pokédex and round out your team. During a trade, however, note the level of the Pokémon you’re going to receive. If you haven’t defeated enough Gym Leaders throughout the region, your new Pokémon might not listen to you in battle. Should you find yourself with a partner who just won’t cooperate, try progressing further down the Victory Road storyline to earn more Gym Badges so that Pokémon of higher levels will be easier to catch and more likely to do what you ask.
Battling Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
When you step into the world of Pokémon, odds are you’re going to find yourself in a Pokémon battle sooner or later. These tests of strength and skill are an exciting way to see who’s the best Trainer around. Primarily, you’ll engage in two types of battles: those against wild Pokémon and those against other Pokémon Trainers.
Encounters with Wild Pokémon
While traversing the Paldea region, you’ll see plenty of wild Pokémon roaming the countryside. Making contact with one will initiate a turn-based battle that should be immediately familiar to Pokémon fans. Try to knock out the wild Pokémon or attempt to catch it—either way, the Pokémon in your party will earn Exp. Points, and you might collect some materials that can be used to make TMs. As mentioned previously, you can gain an advantage against a wild Pokémon by sneaking up and tossing the Poké Ball containing your lead Pokémon at it.
Tera Raid Battles are a variation on wild Pokémon battles where you and a group of other Trainers take on an exceptionally powerful Terastallized Pokémon.
If you want to focus more on exploration than battling, you can use the “Let’s Go!” command to send a Pokémon out to battle wild Pokémon without needing any input from you. These Auto Battles, which function much like the battles you’ll face within Team Star’s bases, won’t give your party the full amount of Exp. Points they’d get from a standard battle. You also won’t have the opportunity to catch any of the wild Pokémon that your team takes on in Auto Battles. That said, your Pokémon will still earn some Exp. Points and collect useful items for you. Auto Battles can affect your Pokémon’s HP, so keep an eye on their HP meter to make sure they don’t get too worn out to battle.
Engaging in Trainer Battles (Or Not)
It was once a longstanding tradition of the Pokémon series that two Trainers whose eyes meet must battle. But in the Paldea region, battling the many Trainers you’ll see along your journey requires you to chat with them first. That means you no longer need to worry about being forced into a battle when you’re simply trying to reach a destination. Don’t just ignore Trainer battles, though! They’re essential to earning more Exp. Points for your Pokémon, money for yourself, and entries for your Pokédex.
Studying at the Academy
Your grand Treasure Hunt begins at Naranja Academy or Uva Academy depending on whether you’re playing Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, respectively. No matter which game you’re playing, there are enthusiastic teachers to meet, informative classes to take, and valuable lessons to learn whenever you need a break from adventuring in the great outdoors.
Exploring the School
There are plenty of places to visit within the academy, from the school store to the biology lab to your own dorm room. These facilities allow you to mingle with faculty members, chat with students, and even purchase helpful items. You’ll notice at times that certain areas will display an exclamation point in the navigation menu—this marks an opportunity to build your trust with a character in that location. Go have a chat and see how they’re doing!
Why You Shouldn’t Cut Class in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
You might be tempted to cut class and join Team Star with all their snazzy outfits, but there are plenty of reasons to show up for school in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. There are seven different classes you can take: biology, math, history, languages, battle studies, art, and home economics. These classes are a great opportunity to investigate Paldean lore, brush up on your knowledge of battling, and learn just about every subject in between. Each class consists of eight lectures, plus a midterm and a final exam. You’ll want to pay attention, because the midterms and finals reference key points made during each lecture. The good news? Passing these tests will grant you some nice rewards!
Each class is run by a different teacher, and the more classes you take, the more opportunities you’ll have to interact with them in the academy. You’ll also be able to meet with Director Clavell and other faculty members. As you get to know these characters and earn their trust, they may ask you to run an errand or two that can result in meaningful rewards. For instance, Mr. Jacq the biology teacher will make himself available in his classroom to check on your Pokédex progress, so be sure to stop by the biology lab as you hit new catching milestones.
Using the Map App in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
Every Trainer with a badge or two under their belt knows that the journey is as important as the destination. Luckily, your Rotom Phone has the perfect tool for planning where you’re going and how to get there. The Paldea region’s map plays a more involved role than in past games—rather than following a series of linear routes, you’ll be working with a dynamic app that’s bursting with locational and topographical details. It might be a bit overwhelming at first, but taking some time to learn about the map app’s various icons will make charting your course a breeze!
Pokémon Centers, Tera Raid crystals, Pokémon Gyms, Team Star’s crew bases, and Titan Pokémon’s lairs all have their own special icons on your map app. Hovering over icons for specific Gyms, bases, and lairs will reveal more information about the Trainer or Pokémon you’ll be facing there. Tera Raid icons additionally indicate the Tera Type of the wild Terastallized Pokémon you can challenge at that Tera Raid crystal. After you’ve visited a major location once, an icon displaying a small pair of wings will indicate that you can take a Flying Taxi to quickly return there at any time. Pokémon Centers are the most common Flying Taxi destinations, but there are other special locations you can fly to, such as the academy.
Zooming in on your map in specific cities or towns with the ZR Button will also reveal a more detailed map where you can find the exact shop you want to visit. All these icons look the same, but the names of each specific shop will appear, making it easier than ever to find your next trendy haircut or stylish accessory.
When it comes to using the map and finding your way to a specific icon, the easiest way to point yourself in the right direction is to set a destination. After you close the app, you’ll pivot to face your target location. But you won’t always be able to get there as the Murkrow flies—keep an eye on certain landmasses and bodies of water that might be in your way. If a route looks like it could be traversed with Koraidon or Miraidon’s current roaming capabilities, it’s probably fair game! And if it’s not, you might want to try revisiting the location after completing more tasks in the storylines available to you.
Items in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
On an adventure through the great outdoors, you’ll need everything you can get your hands on. Classics such as Poké Balls, Potions, and TMs are making a return, but the Paldea region is also introducing a slew of new goodies—including Pokémon materials and Tera Shards—for you to collect. Whether you’re finding items in the open world, earning them from Tera Raid Battles, or purchasing them from the Poké Mart and other unique shops, you’ll never have trouble fueling your journey.
Finding Items in Paldea
As you continue your Treasure Hunt, you’re bound to find some actual treasures along the way. Like past Pokémon games, items of varying rarity can be found on the ground. In Paldea, though, these collectible objects glow brightly across their surroundings, making it easy to zero in on them. If you see a sparkle or a small beam of light, don’t forget to pick up the item there—or send out a Pokémon to grab it for you! Some items in the open world will reset daily, so you’ll always have an opportunity to beef up your inventory. Out in Paldea, you’ll also be able to collect materials that wild Pokémon drop after battling—a key resource for making TMs.
Buying Items in Paldea
Before we get down to which items you can buy in this region, it’s time for a lesson in Paldean economics. Traditionally, Trainers in the Pokémon series earned money by selling items and winning battles. That’s still true in Paldea, but in addition to money, you can also make purchases with a new currency called League Points—not unlike Watts in the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games. These League Points (LP for short) can be earned by completing Tera Raid Battles, battling Terastallized Pokémon, and defeating Team Star’s bosses. In addition to purchasing items at Pokémon Centers and certain vendors, LP can be used to make TMs.
Another important change coming to Paldea is that items focused on training your Pokémon, such as Bottle Caps and Power Weights, can now be purchased from a shop called Delibird Presents. Some branches of Delibird Presents also stock popular held items like Eviolites, so make sure to check their inventory whenever you come across a new store.
How to Make TMs in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
Whether you’re building up a team for your Treasure Hunt or to compete in multiplayer battles, TMs (short for Technical Machines) are an important resource for accessing the right moves to suit your desired playstyle. In addition to finding TMs in the wild and receiving them as rewards for defeating certain Trainers, TMs can also be made at any Pokémon Center using materials that are dropped by wild Pokémon after battle. If you want to craft a TM for a specific move, you’ll need to exchange Pokémon materials and League Points at a TM Machine—and yes, that stands for “Technical Machine Machine.”
Materials for TMs can take a while to gather, but if you run around the open world engaging in Auto Battles, you’ll collect plenty before you know it. The amount of materials you gather can also be enhanced by the Item Drop Power gained from certain meals and sandwiches, making it even easier to keep your TM library stocked. And if you don’t need to craft any TMs, you can visit a Pokémon Center’s TM Machine to exchange extra materials for League Points!
The Wondrous Foods and Picnics of Paldea
Head over to Paldea and enjoy all the delicacies that the region has to offer. Whether you’re out picnicking or visiting a restaurant, from paella to takoyaki, there’s something to suit everyone’s tastes. For Trainers and their Pokémon, though, mealtime is a powerful experience—literally. Eating certain foods grants special benefits called Meal Powers, so you should never go exploring on an empty stomach.
Meal Powers to Go
There’s a plethora of Meal Powers that can be obtained from food sold by vendors or by eating sandwiches at a picnic such as: Catching Power, Egg Power, Encounter Power, Exp. Point Power, Humungo Power, Item Drop Power, Raid Power, and Teensy Power. They’re generally self-explanatory—if you’re searching for valuable Tera Shards, for example, eating a meal that grants Raid Power will increase the rewards received from successful Tera Raid Battles! A single meal can bestow multiple Meal Powers, but you’ll only be able to benefit from one meal at a time, so choose your food carefully and stack up as many useful benefits as you can.

Whenever you need a break from your adventures, try setting up a table, making a few sandwiches, and spending some quality time with your team. You might even find a Pokémon Egg once all the fun is done! You’ll also be able to customize your picnic table and acquire picnic goods as you progress through your journey. Just remember that you’ll only be able to use your Picnic Set where there’s plenty of space for your Pokémon to run around.
Sandwich Artistry
Some say that there is endless potential between two slices of bread. Along your journey, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase ingredients for picnics—and we’re not just talking lettuce and tomatoes! You can pack your sandwiches with all sorts of ingredients, and the ones you choose will directly affect what kinds of Meal Powers you receive. As you make progress on your Treasure Hunt, you’ll unlock a myriad of sandwich recipes to create works of culinary art and experience the wonder of Meal Powers!
Making sandwiches in real life is a relatively easy task, but while you’re out picnicking in Paldea, you’d better put your game face on. Whether you’re working on a solo sub or joining with friends to pile condiments onto a giant baguette, you’ll stack up ingredients in a fun-filled minigame to try making the ultimate sandwich! When you make sandwiches with friends, there’s an even greater chance that your sandwich will hit its peak potential and bestow more potent Meal Powers.

Playing with Pokémon and Washing Up
Pokémon enjoy eating sandwiches and hanging out, but they also love to play! During your picnics, you’ll be able to toss out a ball and spend some quality time with your teammates outside of battle. Deepening the bonds between Trainer and Pokémon is one of the best ways to strengthen your team, so keep an eye on their happiness and play with them during picnics. Some Pokémon even evolve once you’ve strengthened your friendship, so keep that in mind on your adventures!
It’s only natural that you and your Pokémon may end up getting a bit messy while journeying through the great outdoors of Paldea, and there’s no better way to freshen up than by giving your Pokémon a good old scrub. Washing your Pokémon will restore their HP and cure all status conditions. Be careful where you wash, though, because some Pokémon don’t like being scrubbed everywhere—or even being washed at all! Finding Eggs
Once you’re done making and enjoying sandwiches, you may want to check on your basket, because you might find a few items waiting for you—including Pokémon Eggs! Whether you’re picnicking by yourself or hamming it up with friends, there’s a chance that an Egg will appear in your basket based on the species of Pokémon participating in the picnic. But like any gathering, you’ll need to think carefully about who to invite. Hosting a picnic with only two compatible Pokémon of differing genders and a shared Egg Group is a great way to guarantee which species will hatch from the Eggs you find there. And if for any reason you don’t want the Eggs that show up in your basket, you can always donate them to the academy for someone else to care for!
