The domestic Japanese video game market is up 172.9% in 2017 from 2016 for hardware and 103.8% in software thanks to the success of Nintendo Switch, which was the best-selling dedicated game system for the year with 3,407,158 units sold. PlayStation 4 took second place with 1,935,247 units sold, narrowly beating Nintendo 3DS, which achieved 1,827,131. In addition, nine out of the top 10 best-selling retail games for the year are all on Nintendo platforms:
