How to upgrade or change your Nintendo Switch Online membership type

Posted on January 15, 2019January 10, 2019 by Blogger

Read on below to learn whether you can change your Nintendo Switch Online membership type between Individual or Family:

Can I Change My Nintendo Switch Online Membership Type (Individual or Family)?

Important:

If you want to change the time-frame for your current membership, click here.

Information:

There is not an automated way to change one type of membership to another. However, please use the information below to see if there is a solution that works for your situation.

If you already have an individual membership and want to upgrade to a family membership:

  • You can purchase or be added to a family membership.
    • Family memberships can be purchased by players aged 18 or older. Nintendo Account owners of any age can be added to someone else’s family membership.
    • Make sure that you’ve turned off auto-renewal, so the individual membership doesn’t begin again.
    • Please note that the remaining time on your individual membership will not be carried over to extend the family membership, so you will have two memberships running concurrently. You will receive whichever is longer – the remaining time on the family membership or the remaining time on your individual membership.
  • If you have a significant amount of time remaining on your individual membership, please contact us for additional options.

If you have both an individual and a family membership and you want to combine memberships:

  • Time cannot be combined between two different types of memberships.
  • If someone else in your family group purchased the family membership, you can leave the family group. You will still be covered on your individual membership until the time runs out.
    • Make sure that you’ve turned off auto-renewal, so the individual membership doesn’t begin again.
  • If you purchased an individual and then a family membership, you will have two memberships running concurrently and receive whichever is longer – the remaining time on the family membership or the remaining time on your individual membership. [More info]
  • If you have a significant amount of time remaining on your membership plans, please contact us for additional options.
If you are already part of a family membership and want to change to an individual membership:

  • It is not possible to purchase an individual membership when you’re part of a family membership.
  • If someone else in your family group purchased the family membership, you can leave the family group and purchase an individual membership for yourself.
  • If you purchased the family membership, you will need to wait until your current membership ends and purchase the other one.
    • If you want to change to an individual membership when the family membership you purchased ends, make sure that you’ve turned off auto-renewal, so the family membership doesn’t begin again.
    • Keep in mind that anyone else in your family group will also lose access to the service when your membership ends.
