Mobile users have spent $2.5 billion on Pokémon GO and other mobile Pokémon games

It’s no secret that Pokémon is the most successful and most popular media franchise in the entire world. This fact is only strengthened by how well Pokémon GO and other mobile Pokémon games are continuing to do in terms of accumulating massive amounts of revenue. Read on below for some interesting statistics from the folks at Sensor Tower:

In their quest to catch them all, mobile gamers worldwide have spent approximately $2.5 billion so far in Pokémon franchise titles, new data from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform reveals. This amount combines six titles, but one in particular has—unsurprisingly—accounted for the lion’s share, and that’s Pokémon GO with close to 98 percent of all player spending.

That percentage represents nearly $2.45 billion of the total, with the remaining five franchise titles available on the App Store and Google Play contributing the other $50 million. The best performing of them is Pokémon Shuffle Mobile from 2015, which has grossed about 10 percent or close to $25 million of the total to date. It’s followed by Pokémon Duel, Pokémon Quest, Pokémon: Magikarp Jump, and the franchise’s first mobile iteration, Pokémon TCG Online.

Breaking down Pokémon game spending on mobile by country, the United States comes out on top with about 35 percent of all revenue or $875 million. Japan, birthplace of the franchise, accounts for 29 percent or approximately $725 million.

These titles combined have been installed by nearly 640 million mobile users globally since 2014, with Pokémon GO claiming about 86 percent or 550 million of those. In second place is Pokémon Duel with slightly more than 39 million installs. Note that this figure isn’t inclusive of Camp Pokémon, a free “interactive experience” app meant to introduce young children to the franchise.

Spending in Pokémon franchise titles on mobile surpassed $58 million last month globally, which was about 30 percent more than their revenue in February 2018. Ninety-nine percent of that spending ($57.4 million) was in Pokémon GO.
