How to complete new Looming in the Shadows Special Research for Team GO Rocket in Pokémon GO

The leaders of Team GO Rocket and Giovanni have officially invaded the world of Pokémon GO. Read on below for all the details:

Complete Special Research to battle Giovanni — By battling Team GO Rocket Grunts, defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders, and proving you’re an accomplished Trainer, you’ll be able to complete research to receive a Super Rocket Radar from Professor Willow. The Super Rocket Radar will help you locate Giovanni! But watch out—some Grunts have figured out what we’re up to. They may pretend to be Giovanni and get in your way! But keep at it, because if you defeat Giovanni, you may be able to rescue Legendary Shadow Pokémon, including Shadow Articuno. Shadow Porygon has also made its Pokémon GO debut.

Pokémon Go: Looming in the Shadows Research guide

STEP 1

  • Spin 10 PokéStops (500 XP)
  • Defeat 3 Team GO Rocket Grunts (500 XP)
  • Catch 1 Shadow Pokémon (500 XP)

Reward: 500 Stardust, 10 Poké Balls, 10 Razz Berries

STEP 2

  • Spin a PokéStop 5 days in a row (750 XP)
  • Purify 15 Shadow Pokémon (750 XP)
  • Win 5 raids (750 XP)

Reward: 1,000 Stardust, 3 Hyper Potions, 3 Revives

Note: Purifying 15 Shadow Pokémon is an expensive endeavor, sometimes costing 3,000 or 5,000 Stardust each. Look for Shadow Ratata or Shadow Zubat, who only cost 1,000 Stardust to purify.

STEP 3

  • Build a Rocket Radar by taking down Team Rocket grunts and combining six Mysterious Components.

STEP 4

  • Find Team Rocket Leaders using the Rocket Radar and catch their Shadow Pokémon.

STEP 5

  • In this step you’ll be tracking down Giovanni thanks to your newly-built Rocket Radar and rescuing a Legendary Shadow Pokémon.

  • Evolve 2 Pokémon (Murkrow encounter)
  • Power up a Pokémon 5 times (Sableye encounter)

Reward: 1,000 Stardust, 2,000 XP

STEP 2

  • Catch 2 Shadow Pokémon (Koffing encounter)
  • Defeat 3 Team GO Rocket Grunts (Ekans encounter)

Reward: 2,000 Stardust, 2,000 XP, 5 Golden Razz Berries

STEP 3

  • Purify 3 Shadow Pokémon (3,000 Stardust)
  • Purify a Fire, Water, or Grass-type Shadow Pokémon (3,000 XP)

Reward: 2,000 Stardust, 5 Silver Pinap Berries, 1 Rare Candy

STEP 4

  • Auto completed (1,000 Stardust)
  • Auto completed (1,000 XP)
  • Auto completed (1,000 Stardust)

Reward: 1 Fast TM, 1 Charged TM, 3 Rare Candies
