For this edition of FanArt Friday, we are honored to have the presence of the extraordinary Addy, also known as Pixeladdy.
He is an incredible anime-inspired Pixel artist.
Art means so many different things to Addy, and it has always been a big part of his life, whether through drawing, music, or film.
“(Art) has always been a form of expression, a mental escape, a chance to share a moment, and a way to evoke emotion. In my opinion, art is what allows us to be unique and helps us differentiate from one another. Everyone interprets art differently, expresses it differently, and experiences it differently. That’s the beauty of art.”
Pokémon has always been a big part of Addy’s life, but his love for the franchise was reignited during the franchise.
“It has always been nostalgic for me. Some of my earliest memories as a child (most people would probably say the same) are related to the franchise, whether it was trading cards on the playground with other kids, playing the games on the Game Boy, or just watching the show before school in the morning! It is an amazing franchise that continues to deliver amazing experiences for new and old fans,” he shared.
Our featured artist started his journey as an artist in 2022, and the results have been very surprising for him. “I never thought I would receive the support I have been greeted with. It’s still insane to me how many people resonate with my art,” he explained.
“Combining my love for art and Pokémon is something that I feel is relatable to a lot of people out there, and as long as there is one person that enjoys my art, I will continue to make it! Anytime you combine things you love, something beautiful comes from it.”
Addy shared that his style has been trying to emulate the pixel art style from the games to provide “ultimate nostalgia.” He uses many of his custom elements but also loves to add original things from the games.
“My signature is combining Gen 3 background elements Gen 4 Sprites,” he mentioned.
Addy plans his posts a week in advance. He sketches out the design, uses Aseprite to create the artwork, and refines it until he is satisfied. Before posting, he often sends his work to trusted members of the Pokémon Community to gather their opinions and suggestions for any final touches
For our featured artist, Ash and Pikachu’s departure is “very, very sad for many OG fans like me. Simply because of the fact that we grew up with Ash and Pika, so it almost feels like a part of us is leaving. But at the same time, I think it’s necessary for the anime. I am a big believer in changes being something positive, and I think the Pokémon franchise is ready to move on and bring new main characters into the mix.”
Choosing a favorite Pokémon is difficult for Addy since he never had a favorite. “It’s a cliché thing to say, but there were always many amazing ones. I have several ones I love, and the list includes Pikachu, Celebi, Jirachi, Snorlax, Turtwig, Lugia, Arceus, Suicune, Combusken, Bonsly, Gengar, Glaceon, etc.”
