For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is ecstatic to display the beautiful artwork of the gifted artist named Angélica Silva (sweetdrops.art). She was also one of the artists who participated in Pokédex Ilustrada, the project helmed by our friends from Ilustradoras Unidas.
Art is a fundamental aspect of Angélica’s life. It’s a form of self-expression. She loves learning from others and challenging herself by seeing how far she can go and how different and unexpected things will result if she does things the same way as her peers.
“It’s also a kind of mood sensor. There are people who, when they don’t like some illustration (or any other artistic expression) they have made, tear it up or throw it away. I prefer to keep them and compare how much I have improved and what I have learned. I think it works like a snapshot of the moment in time.”
“I think Pokémon marked a before and after for so many people,” she shared. “My mind is full of memories of watching the Anime series, laughing and crying with it; singing while listening to the ‘Pokémon 2.B.A. Master‘ cassette; meeting important people; playing cards; eating ice cream and chips just because they came with stickers or Pogs. Pokémon was the beginning of collecting and constant drawing for me. It brings me nostalgia, but at the same time, it’s exceptional because the franchise grew up with us and accompanied me in different stages of my life through different iterations.”
For Angélica, drawing Pokémon is very soothing.
“As much as you want to get better at what you find the harder to draw or pain, sometimes you need to return to your comfort zone and let your imagination run wild. And that’s Pokémon for me, ” she explained to Pokémon Blog.
Wooper (“I love how expressive it can be, despite its simple design. There are many chapters in the series where you can see a Wooper in the background doing weird and out-of-context things”) and Bellsprout (“I fell in love with it playing Pokémon Crystal. The tower story had me completely hooked”) are her top choices for favorite Pokémon, but she “could make an entire list of favorite Pokémon because does anyone have just one?”
