For this edition of FanArt Friday, Pokémon Blog is ecstatic to feature the beautiful artwork of the gifted Brenda E., also known by her clever pseudonym Gira (girasunflowerart). She participated in the third generation of Pokédex Ilustrada and the project celebrating the “First Anniversary of FanArt Friday” called “Pokémon Fan: Dibuja Tu Equipo Soñado,” both organized by the dream team of Ilustradoras Unidas.
Brenda considers that art is everywhere, and every detail in our lives has a bit of it, even the bad parts.
“It’s complicated to define art simply,” she told the Pokémon Blog Team. “As a child, I always admired the sky, clouds, animals, nature, people, my family, friends, and other things. Art generates a feeling, and we can express it not only through drawings but also in songs, poems, melodies, films, or whatever feels right to express emotions and feel free to manifest them. I think that’s what makes us human and real.”
Our featured artist has had an enduring relationship with the Pokémon franchise since she was a child: “I would come back from school to play a Pokémon ROM on the computer because it wasn’t common for a girl to play with consoles like the GameBoy back then. I grew up as the youngest sibling with older brothers. I remember we would watch the Pokémon anime together, learn the lyrics of the PokéRap, and play TCG cards with them. I also collected cards and figurines.”
Brenda always wished for the Pokémon to become real so she could fly on the back of a Dragonite.
“To this day, I still play and replay some versions of the Pokémon games,” she said. “It’s funny because when I’m stressed, I usually draw Pokémon, play the games, or listen to the OST (for example, Pokémon Emerald). It makes life feel much lighter. It’s my therapy and my escape.”
Happiness is the word she uses to describe the opportunity to combine two of her biggest hobbies in the world and capture her ideas in an illustration.
“My imagination is always with me, maybe because of my anxiety. I also overthink a lot, but I tend to fantasize because I get distracted easily. As I said earlier, Pokémon is my therapy because it gives me peace to draw them (it could be an Eevee or a Rayquaza) and listen to some good lo-fi Pokémon music. It’s wonderful. Truly.”
Typhlosion is one of her favorite Pokémon because he was her first starter when she began playing Pokémon as a child (“Pokémon Crystal was where all my love for video games started”).
Brenda spent a lot of time watching the Pokémon anime, so she thought the Pokémon games worked similarly, and she only needed her Typhlosion to accompany her on her journey in the Johto region, just like Ash needed his Pikachu.
“I had other Pokémon for HMs, but I only trained my Typhlosion, which I named Garfilito in honor of Garfield, to level 92. I was able to beat Lance with just Garfilito, a moment I will always remember. Since then, I always have a Typhlosion on my team (including one with a Best Buddy Ribbon in Pokémon Go), but Garfilito remains my favorite. He’s special for defeating the League on his own,” she concluded.
